Dairy Development Programme (DDP)

The Dairy Development Programme was formed in 1982 with a mission to spearhead Dairy Development in Zimbabwe's Communal, Resettlement and Small-Scale Commercial Areas in Zimbabwe.

1.1 Development Objective

The overall and developmental Objective of the ARDA Dairy Development Programme is to reduce poverty levels among the rural communities in Zimbabwe through increasing Income opportunities from Smallholder dairy Production. The Project focuses on increasing the capacity of Smallholder Dairy Farmers, the majority of whom are women and children, to increase milk production and attain higher levels of year round income from Milk Sales. The Project also trains young people to provide themselves with opportunities for making a living through Dairy Farming

1.2 Specific Objectives

1.2.1        To increase the quantity and quality of fodder produced by smallholder dairy farmers.

1.2.2        To improve the breeds of smallholder dairy animals and reduce cattle mortality rates. 

1.2.3        To empower the grassroots groups SHODFAZ and Women in Dairy to better represent farmers and influence policy in ways which increase opportunities in dairy farming and contribute to profitability and sustainability.

1.2.4        To minimise the impact of HIV and AIDS on community livelihoods through raising awareness and through improved nutrition

1.2.5        To train and involve more youth in the dairy industry, in order achieve poverty reduction, employment creation and improved economic stability and continuity.

1.3 Immediate objective

DDP's immediate objective is to increase the milk produced, processed and marketed by smallholder dairy farmers in Zimbabwe. 

1.4 Dairy Development Programme Activities

  • Project planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation;
  • Institutional and Dairy Farmers' capacity building;
  • Setting up Farmer managed Dairy Associations/ Cooperatives
  • Strengthened farmer mobilization and training
  • Coordinated animal health and breeding
  • Coordinated fodder production and dairy cattle feed management
  • Coordinated milk production, processing and marketing
  • Strengthened centre  administration and financial management
  • Sourcing funds from government and donors for dairy projects
  • Setting up dairy infrastructure and equipment
  • Lobbying and advocacy for policy change in the Dairy Sector; and
  • Gender and HIV/AIDS awareness in the Dairy Projects.
